Although not available in all cars, it is available for the cars with an automatic transmission system.  It indicates that there’s a problem with car’s transmission system.

In most cases the check engine light will also turn on with the transmission warning light.

The appearance of a transmission warning light will be different through various car models. It could be a flashing overdrive light or a text display in the information center. In some cars there will be a symbol of a gear with an exclamation mark inside.

Reasons for the transmission warning light.

  1. Transmission Overheating
  2. Low Transmission Fluid Level
  3. Internal Transmission Failure
  4. Shift Interlock Issues
  5. Valve Body Problems
  6. Torque Converter Issues
  7. Problems With Electronics and Computer Controls

What to do next when the transmission warning light comes?

The transmission is one of the most expensive system in a car. Repairing of the transmission system could be very expensive and time consuming. If the transmission light illuminates while you drive, find a safe place and stop the car. Next, let the vehicle cool down for sometime (in most cases the transmission warning light comes with transmission fluid overheating).

After letting the car to cool down, try starting the car and see if the light still illuminates. If the light is gone, you can drive the car again, with the aim of attending the problem as soon as possible. If the light comes up again, you might need to stop the car and let it cool again.

What if I drive the car with the transmission light on?

The transmission light warns you about the possible problems in the transmission system. It could be associated with low transmission fluid levels, which is very bad for your car. Therefore, you should not drive longer with the transmission light on. With low or contaminated fluids, the temperature inside the transmission system might rise and cause more damage to the entire system. It might cost you very expensive repair bills eventually.
